Fire Emblem
Characters can go to a higher class after they reached level 10 or above. The maximum level that a single character class can reach is level 20. When a character is already in its max level, he cannot improve his stats nor his experience any further. This is when promotion item comes handy.

IV - Guiding Ring

9) Monk to Sage - Lucius, Renault
10) Mage to Sage - Erk, Pent, Nino
11) Shaman to Druid - Canas
12) Troubadour to Valkyrie - Priscilla
V - Elysian Whip
13) Pegasus Knight to Falcoknight - Florina, Fiora, Farina
14) Wyvern Rider to Wyvern Lord - Heath, Vaida
VI - Fell Contract

VII - Ocean Seal
